Azerbaijan at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Azerbaijan at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the group IV of the Europe/Africa zone. Following was the team of Azerbaijan:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

A total of eight countries participated in the tournament in the group IV of the Europe/Africa zone. Those were Azerbaijan, Iceland, Madagascar, Malta, Mauritius, San Marino, Senegal and Uganda. However, Senegal withdrew from the tournament. Players from Azerbaijan were quite hopeful that their hard work would pay off in the tournament.

Participation and Performance of Azerbaijan in the 2006 Davis Cup

Azerbaijan at the 2006 Davis Cup first played the round robin event in the pool B. however the first set of matches against Senegal was not conducted. On the 19th of July, at the Marsa Sports Club, Malta, Azerbaijan played against Madagascar. However, this leg of the tournament did not do any good for the competitors from Azerbaijan and the team lost all the three matches that it played. The second set of matches in the round robin event that Azerbaijan at the 2006 Davis Cup played was against Mauritius. These matches were held on the 21st of July at the same sports club. In the first match, Patel from Mauritius defeated Shirinov from Azerbaijan 6-0, 6-7 and 7-5. Another player from Azerbaijan, Agaev also had to face a defeat from Goroyam.

Goroyam won the match 7-6, 7-6. However in the third match, which was the men’s doubles match, Agaev and Hajiyev won against Daruty and Goroyam in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. thus, at the end of the round robin tournament, Azerbaijan at the 2006 Davis Cup was sent to play in the 5th to 7th place play offs. In the play offs, the team of Azerbaijan won one match while lost one match. Thus, Azerbaijan stood at the 6th position in the final standings.
On the whole, performance of Azerbaijan at the 2006 Davis Cup was meager and pitiable.
