Participation and Performance of Austria in the 2006 Davis Cup

The team of Austria at the 2006 Davis Cup participated with a lot of enthusiasm in the first round of the tournament. The first round was held in the Schwarzl Freizeit Zentrum, Graz, Austria and was held from the 10th to the 12th of February. In this round, the matches were played between Austria and Croatia. Both the teams were a perfect match for each other in terms of talent, grit and determination. In the first match, Jurgen Melzer played against Mario Ancic. It was a very long match which resulted in two tie breakers. The match was however won by the Croatian player and Jurgen had to face a defeat 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 4-6, 3-6. In the second match, Ivan Ljubicic defeated Stefan Koubek in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. Alexander Peya another Austrian played against Ivan Cerovic and won the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Then the match between Stefan Koubek and Marin Cilic was played. The Austrian competitor Koubek defeated his rival in straight sets 6-1, 7-5.

Thus, each country had won two matches so far. The men’s doubles match was going to be the decider as to which team would advance to the next round. The men’s doubles match proved to be a neck to neck fight and the match yielded a total of 6 sets. However, the Austrian players lost the match 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-8. Thus, Austria’s dream came to a tragic end when the team was out of the tournament in the first round itself.
On the whole, performance of Austria at the 2006 Davis Cup was poor.
