Participation and Performance of Australia in the 2006 Davis Cup

The first round matches were held from the 10th of February to the 12th. In the first round, Australia played against Switzerland and progressed ahead having won three of the five matches that it played. Then in the second round, Australian players battled it out against the contenders from Belarus. This round proved to be extremely successful for the Australians since all the five matches were eon by Australia. Three of the five matches were won in straight sets by the enthusiastic Australian competitors. Chris Guccione defeated Max Mirnyi from Belarus by 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Another player Lleyton Hewitt won the match against Vladimir Voltchkov 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Even Wayne Arthurs and Chris Guccione in his second match burst out on the court having won against Serquei Tarasevitch and Alexandr Zotov respectively.

Australia thus advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament. In the semifinal round, Australia faced Argentina. All the games in the semifinal proved to be extremely fatal for the Australians. The contenders from Argentina proved to be far better than the Australian. The aggression and passion for the game that the Argentina players showed was way above than that showed by the boys from the land of kangaroos. All the players lost their matches and Australia had to return home with its dreams unfulfilled.
On the whole, performance of Australia at the 2006 Davis Cup was at par with other nations.
