Armenia at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men�s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Armenia at the 2006 Davis Cup competed with other teams in the Europe/Africa zone. This nation was included in the group III of this zone. The team of Armenia at the Cup was as follows:

Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

A total of 16 nations took part in the group III of the Europe/Africa zone matches. However, the group was divided in to two venues. The first venue included teams like Andorra, Armenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco and Turkey. The second venue comprised teams like Botswana, Cote D�lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Armenia in the 2006 Davis Cup

The first set of matches that Armenia at the 2006 Davis Cup played was in the round robin events against Estonia. It was played on the 19th of July and Armenia won only one match as against two won by Estonia. All the players from Armenia then decided to put their heart and soul in their performances in the next matches. On the 20th of July, Armenia competed with Andorra. Out of the three matches against Andorra, two were won by Armenia and only one was lost.

However, in the third performance against Lithuania, Armenian players once again slipped and lost two matches. Due to the sub standard performance given by the competitors from Armenia, the nation was relegated to the group IV of the Europe/Africa zone in 2007.
On the whole, performance of Armenia at the 2006 Davis Cup was poor and Armenia stood at the seventh position in the final standings.
