Argentina at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Argentina at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the World Group of the tournament. The team of Argentina at the Cup was as follows:

Along with Argentina, 15 other teams battled it out against one another in the World Group category. Those teams were Australia, Austria, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Participation and Performance of Argentina in the 2006 Davis Cup

Argentina at the 2006 Davis Cup gave a fabulous performance right from the start. In the first round of the World Group that was held from the 10th to 12th February, Argentina played against Sweden. To everyone’s surprise, players from Argentina displayed a lot of passion and aggression in their game and won all the five matches. In the second round, Croatia was the opponent. However, the contenders from Argentina once again gave a tough fight and won three of the total five games. Argentina had thus successfully qualified for the semifinal of the Davis Cup. The semifinal matches were held from the 22nd to the 24th of September. In the semifinal matches, Australia was the opponent for Argentina. Argentina earned the praise from all around the world having won all the five matches in the semifinal. Four matches were played and the fifth was one by a walkover. Then in the final match of the Cup, Argentina battled it out against Russia on court. The final round statistics are as follows

The first match was played between Nikolay Davydenko and Juan Iqnacio Chela. Davydenko defeated Chela 6-1, 6-2, 5-7 and 6-4. In the second match, David Nalbandian won against Marat Safin in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. However, Safin won the match against Jose Acasuso. Nalbandian also won against Davydenko 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. In the doubles match, Argentina faced a defeat from Russia. Thus, at the end of the final round, Argentina had won only two of the five matches while Russia had won three. Hence, Russia emerged as the winners of the Davis Cup and Argentina stood as the runner up.
On the whole, performance of Argentina at the 2006 Davis Cup was extraordinary.
