Algeria at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2006 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in the world of men’s tennis. It was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group and a total of 125 nations in other groups. 10th to 12th February saw the first round matches while the final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Algeria at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the Europe/Africa zone. Algeria was included in the group II. The team of Algeria at the Cup was as follows:

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Algeria in the group II of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Macedonia, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The players from Algeria gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Algeria in the 2006 Davis Cup

The first round matches were held from the 7th of April to the 9th of April. Algeria at the 2006 Davis Cup contested directly in the first round. The first set of matches at the Davis Cup that Algeria played was against Slovenia. These games were held in the city of Algiers in Algeria. The matches were played on clay. Algerian players put in their best and gave a tough fight to the players from Slovenia. Out of the total 5 matches that Algeria played against Slovenia, 3 were won by the Algerian athletes while 2 were won by the Slovenian players. Thus, Algeria successfully advanced to the second round of the tournament. The second round was held from 21st to the 23rd of July.

In the second round, Algerian competitors faced the talented players from Finland. These matches were held in Hanko, Finland and were played on clay. Out of the five games, Algeria managed to win only one game and lost the remaining four. The rivals from Finland proved to be more experienced than the Algerian contenders. Thus, Algeria at the 2006 Davis Cup progressed till the second round but failed to advance to the third round of the tournament.
On the whole, performance of Algeria at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
