Introduction

Davis Cup is the leading tennis tournament that is held in the sport of tennis. This tournament is held every year and is regarded as the largest annual international event that is held in the sport of tennis. Started as a challenge between Great Britain and United States this tournament gradually spread to other parts of the world also and thus nations from different corners of the world started taking part in it. The idea of this tennis showdown was conceived in the year 1899 but was materialized in the year 1900. Thus this year marked the beginning of the Davis Cup. Dwight F. Davis played a major role.

 
Thus the tournament which was formerly known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge was renamed as the Davis Cup in his honor in the year 1945. 2003 Davis Cup was the 92nd edition of this tournament. The finals of this tournament was held at the Rod Laver Arena located in Melbourne situated in Australia.

2003 Davis Cup Statistics

2003 Davis Cup saw the participation of 135 teams from all over the world. This year of the tournament was classified into the World Group, America Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Euro/African zone. Further the zones were classified into three Groups. The Group III and Group IV of Euro/African zone was further classified into Venue I and Venue II. In the World Group there were a total of sixteen nations. Amongst the sixteen nations that contested France, Switzerland, Australia, Sweden, Croatia, Spain, Argentina and Russia qualified to the quarterfinals. After some exciting matches in the quarterfinal round Switzerland, Australia, Spain and Argentina qualified to the semifinal round. In the semifinal round Australia defeated Switzerland in a very close round of 3-2 and Spain defeated Argentina by a close margin of 3-2. Thus Australia and Spain qualified to the final round. In the final round Australia dominated the round and defeated Spain by a score line of 3-1.

2003 Davis Cup Summary
2003 Davis Cup was won by Australia and Spain was declared the runners up. Some World Group nations such as Belgium, Brazil, Germany and Great Britain were relegated to the Group I of their respective zones. Some new entrants in the World Group were Austria, Belarus, Canada and Morocco.
