Pakistan at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The 2000 Davis Cup was the most important tournament in men’s tennis which was organized between different nations all over the world. It was the 89th edition of the Davis Cup. This grand event became possible with the participation of 135 nations at the 2000 Davis Cup.The finals were held on December 8-10. Spain defeated Australia in the Finals and won their first Davis Cup title. They achieved this glory for their country at the grand venue of Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona situated in Spain. Pakistan at the 2000 Davis Cup played the matches in the Group II of the Asia/ Pacific zone.

 
Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

The other countries which participated at the 2000 Davis cup other than Pakistan were Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Philippines. These are the countries of the Asia/ pacific Zone and they were all placed in Group II at this tournament. Among the above teams Indonesia emerged as the winning team at the 2000 Davis Cup and also got promoted to the higher group next year as per the rules. Kazakhstan and Philippines relegated to Group III next year depending on their performance at the 2000 Davis Cup.

Pakistan at the 2000 Davis Cup

Following is a brief summary of Pakistan at the 2000 Davis Cup. Pakistan and Hong Kong competed against each other for the first round. Among the 5 matches which were played on this occasion 3 were won by Pakistan and 2 were won by Hong Kong and thus Pakistan got promoted to the second round of the 2000 Davis Cup by defeating Hong Kong, China in the first round of the 2000 Davis Cup. The first round was organized on January 28-30. The result of this match was 3-2 in favor of Pakistan.

Pakistan then competed with Chinese Taipei in the second round which was organized on April 7-9. Out of the 5 matches played in the second round 2 were won by Pakistan and 3 were won by Chinese Taipei. Thus Pakistan at the 2000 Davis Cup failed to play any further matches. The second round got into the hands of Chinese Taipei and they got promoted to play the further matches.

Thus it can be concluded that Pakistan at the 2000 Davis Cup performed very poor and unsatisfactory as compared to their previous records at the Davis Cup.
