Oman at the 2000 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 
Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Oman at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group IV of Asia/Oceania Zone. Oman sent following players to compete in the tournament:

  • Mudrik Al Rawahi
  • Mohammed Al Nabhani
  • Mohammed-Ibrahim Al Balushi

Many Asian countries actively took part in this International tournament. Oman was included in Group IV of Asia/Oceania Zone along with Bahrain, Brunei, Fiji, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

Participation and Performance of Oman in the 2000 Davis Cup

Oman at the 2000 Davis Cup played the matches in round robin at Al-Hussein Sports City, Amman, Jordan from 24th to 30th April. Oman played the first set of matches against Fiji on 24th April. Oman’s players showed good performance. They won all three matches against Fiji. The matches between Oman and Saudi Arabia were played on 25th April. Oman defeated Saudi Arabia in 2 matches. Oman played the matches against Jordan on 26th April. Oman’s players once again showed good performance. They won all three matches against Jordan. The matches between Oman and Bahrain were played on 27th April.

Bahrain won 2 matches, while Oman was able to win single match. Oman played the set of matches against United Arab Emirates on 29th April. Oman again had to face disappointment in these matches. They were able to win single match. They were defeated by United Arab Emirates in 2 matches. Oman’s players showed wonderful performance in the matches against Brunei. They defeated Brunei in all three matches.

On the whole, performance of Oman at the 2000 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
