Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 
Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Netherlands Antilles at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Americas Zone. As tennis got world-wide popularity, many countries were eager to take part in this prestigious tournament. Following countries from Americas Zone competed in the contest: Bolivia, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Netherlands Antilles, Panama, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.

Participation and Performance of Netherlands Antilles in the 2000 Davis Cup

The matches in the round robin were played at Liguanea club, Kingston, Jamaica from 22nd to 24thn March 2000. Netherlands Antilles at the 2000 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against Bolivia. The players from Netherlands Antilles showed dominant game. They won all the three matches against Bolivia. The matches between Netherlands Antilles and Trinidad and Tobago were played on 23rd March. Netherlands Antilles won all 3 matches. Netherlands Antilles defeated Dominican Republic in 2 matches. Netherlands Antilles played the matches against Jamaica in the first round on 25th March. Jamaica’s R. Russell defeated E. Gerth from Netherlands Antilles by 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4. J. Rojer defeated Jamaica’s J. Smith by 7-6, 6-4. Pair of Netherlands Antilles defeated Jamaica’s pair, R. Russell and J. Smith by 6-2, 6-1.

. Netherlands Antilles won 2 matches. Netherlands Antilles played the matches against Dominican Republic. E. Gerth defeated G. De Leon from Dominican Republic by 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3. J. Rojer defeated R. Vallejo from Dominican Republic by 6-3, 6-2. Pair of Dominican Republic, S. Camacho and V. Estrella defeated pair of Netherlands Antilles, R. Behr and K. Jonckheer by 6-2, 6-4.

Netherlands Antilles at the 2000 Davis Cup showed dominant performance. Netherlands Antilles advanced to Group II in 2001 due to the hard work of their players.
