Moldova at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 
Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Moldova at the 2000 Davis Cup was included in Group III of Euro/African Zone. Team of Moldova included following players:

Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone were played in two venues. The countries that played the matches in Venue 1 were Monaco, Botswana, Georgia, Malta, Togo, Tunisia, Yugoslavia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following countries played the matches at Venue 2: Nigeria, Armenia, Benin, Iceland, Macedonia, Madagascar, Moldova and Senegal.

Participation and Performance of Moldova in the 2000 Davis Cup

Moldova at the 2000 Davis Cup played the matches in round robin. The matches were played at ACSA, Antananarivo, Madagascar from 24th to 26th May. Moldova played the first set of matches against Senegal. They won all three matches against Senegal. Moldova defeated Iceland in all three matches. Moldova’s players again showed wonderful performance against Benin. They won all three matches against Benin. Moldova played the matches against Macedonia, F.Y.R. in the first round. The matches were held on 27th May. Moldova’s Y. Gorbane defeated Macedonia’s P. Rusevski by 7-5, 3-6 and 6-4. E. Moldova’s E. Plougarev defeated Macedonia’s Z. Sevcenko by 7-5, 1-6 and 7-5. Macedonia’s pair defeated Moldova’s pair by 6-3, 6-1.

Moldova played the matches against Armenia on 28th May. Moldova’s A. Gorbane defeated Armenia’s H. Sofyan by 4-6, 7-6 and 7-5. Moldova’s V. Ribas defeated Armenia’s T. Gevorgyan by 6-4, 6-4. Armenia’s pair, H. Hakobyan and H. Sofyan defeated Moldova’s pair, A. Gorbane and V. Ribas by 5-7, 7-5 and 6-4.

Moldova at the 2000 Davis Cup showed remarkable performance. It resulted in promotion of Moldova to Group II in 2001.

On the whole, performance of Moldova at the 2000 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
