Mexico at the 2000 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 
Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Mexico at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group II of Americas Zone. Team of Mexico included following players:

  • Bruno Echagaray
  • Oliver Fernandez
  • Santiago Gonzalez
Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

Tennis got world-wide popularity. Many players from Americas Zone took part in this competition with zest and zeal. Mexico was placed in Group II. Other countries in this group were Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Participation and Performance of Mauritius in the 2000 Davis Cup

The matches in the 1st round were played from 4th to 6th February 2000. Mexico played the matches against Costa Rica at Costa Rica C.C., Escazu, Costa Rica. Mexico’s participants played with determination. They won 4 matches against Costa Rica. Costa Rica was able to win single match. Mexico forwarded to the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 7th to 9th April. Mexico played the matches against Guatemala in the second round.

Mexico’s players showed wonderful performance. They defeated Guatemala in all five matches. Mexico advanced to the third round. The matches in the 3rd round were played from 21st to 23rd July 2000. Mexico played the matches against Venezuela. Mexican players maintained their magical performance. They won all five matches against Venezuela.

Overall performance of Mauritius at the 2000 Davis Cup was satisfactory. They got promotion to Group III in 2001.
