Mauritius at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone.The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments.

 
Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Mauritius at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group IV of Euro/African Zone. Following players from Mauritius competed in the tournament:

Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

The matches were played at 2 venues. The countries that played the matches at Venue 1 were Algeria, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Cameroon, Ghana, Liechtenstein, Mauritius and Sudan. Following countries in group IV played the matches at Venue 2: Cyprus, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, San Marino, Uganda and Zambia.

Participation and Performance of Mauritius in the 2000 Davis Cup

The matches in the round-robin were played from 16th to 18th February. Mauritius at the 2000 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against Cameroon at Accra Sports Stadium, Ghana. Players of Mauritius showed magnificent performance. They won all the three matches against Cameroon. The matches between Mauritius and Ghana were played on 17th February. Mauritius could win just single match. Ghana won 2 matches. Mauritius defeated Azerbaijan in 2 matches. Mauritius played the matches against Algeria in the 1st round. The matches were played on 19th February. J. Bourgault Du Coudray from Mauritius defeated Algeria’s N. Mahmoudi by 6-4, 6-1.

Algeria’s A. Hameurlaine defeated K. Patel from Mauritius by 6-7, 6-3 and 6-1. Pair of Mauritius, J. Bourgault Du Coudray and K. Patel defeated Algerian pair, A. Hameurlaine and N. Mahmoudi by 6-3, 6-1. Mauritius played the matches against Ghana on 20th February. Mauritius had to face disappointment in these matches. Ghana’s T. Debrah defeated J. Vencatachellum from Mauritius by 6-3, 6-1. Ghana’s C. Anyidoho defeated J. Bourgault Du Coudray by 4-6, 7-6 and 6-3. Ghana’s pair defeated pair of Mauritius by 6-0, 6-2.

Overall performance of Mauritius at the 2000 Davis Cup was satisfactory. They got promotion to Group III in 2001.
