Malaysia at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 
Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Malaysia at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone. Malaysia’s team included following players:
  • Selvam Veerasingam
  • Vasuthevan Ortchuan
  • Hazuan Hizan
  • Mohammed-Nazreen Fuzi-Nasruddin
  • Adam Malik
Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

Many Asian countries actively participated in the competition. They tried their best to win this prestigious tournament. Malaysia was included in Group II. Other countries in this group were Iran, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Philippines.

Participation and Performance of Malaysia in the 2000 Davis Cup

Malaysia at the 2000 Davis Cup played the matches directly in the 1st round. Malaysia played the matches against Iran in the first round from 4th to 6th February 2000 at National Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Iran’s Ramin Raziyani defeated Malaysia’s Hazuan Hizan by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1. Malaysia’s Selvam Veerasingam defeated Iran’s Akbar Taheri by 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5. Iran’s pair, Ramin Raziyani and Akbar Taheri defeated Malaysian pair, Selvam Veerasingam and Vasuthevan Ortchuan by 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4. Selvam Veerasingam defeated Ramin Raziyani by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4. Hazuan Hizan defeated Akbar Taheri by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3. Malaysia won 3 matches, while Iran won 2 matches. Malaysia forwarded to the 2nd round. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 7th to 9th April. Malaysia played the matches against Indonesia. Malaysia’s players could not perform well.

Indonesia’s Suwandi Suwandi defeated Vasuthevan Ortchuan by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3. Febi Widhiyanto from Indonesia defeated Malaysia’s Selvam Veerasingam by 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2. Malaysia’s pair was defeated by Indonesia’s pair by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1. Febi Widhiyanto defeated Malaysia’s Mohammed-Nazreen Fuzi-Nasruddin by 6-0, 6-1. Suwandi Suwandi defeated Adam Jaya by 6-1, 6-1. Thus Malaysia lost all the five matches against Indonesia. As a result, they could not advance to the third round.

Malaysia at the 2000 Davis Cup had to face disappointment.
