Macedonia at 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone.

 
The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Macedonia, F.Y.R.at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Euro/African Zone. Team of Macedonia, F.Y.R. included following players:

  • Kristian Mitrovski
  • Predrag Rusevki
Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone were played in two venues. The countries that played the matches in Venue 1 were Monaco, Botswana, Georgia, Malta, Togo, Tunisia, Yugoslavia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following countries played the matches at Venue 2: Nigeria, Armenia, Benin, Iceland, Macedonia, F.Y.R., Madagascar, Moldova and Senegal.

Participation and Performance of Macedonia in the 2000 Davis Cup

Macedonia, F.Y.R. at the 2000 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against Nigeria in round-robin. The matches were played at ACSA, Antananarivo, Madagascar on 24th May. Macedonia’s players showed wonderful performance. Macedonia won all the three matches against Nigeria. The second set of matches that Macedonia played in round-robin was against Armenia. Armenia won 2 matches. Macedonia was able to win just single match. The matches between Macedonia and Madagascar were played on 26th May. Macedonia defeated Madagascar in 2 matches. Madagascar could win single match. Macedonia played the matches against Moldova in the 1st round. The matches were held on 27th May.

Moldova’s Y. Gorbane defeated Macedonia’s P. Rusevski by 7-5, 3-6 and 6-4. E. Moldova’s E. Plougarev defeated Macedonia’s Z. Sevcenko by 7-5, 1-6 and 7-5. Macedonia’s pair defeated Moldova’s pair by 6-3, 6-1. Macedonia played the matches against Iceland in the 3rd/4th play-off round. The matches were played on 28th May. Macedonia had to face disappointment in these matches. Iceland’s R. Bonifacius was defeated by Macedonia’s Z. Sevcenko by 6-2, 6-2. Iceland’s A. Sigurdsson defeated K. Mitrovski by 6-3, 6-3. Iceland’s pair defeated Macedonia’s pair by 6-3, 6-4.

On the whole, performance of Macedonia, F.Y.R.at the 2000 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
