Lithuania at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were total 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 119 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 
Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final was played from 8th to 10th December at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain. Lithuania at the 2000 Davis Cup was placed in Group II of Euro/African Zone. Lithuania sent following players to compete in the tournament:

  • Rolandas Murashka
  • Paulius Jurkenas
Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

Tennis became popular among the players. Many players from different countries were eager to take part in this prestigious tournament. The countries that participated in Group II of Euro/African Zone were Bulgaria, Cote D’lvoire, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey.

Participation and Performance of Lithuania in the 2000 Davis Cup

Lithuania at the 2000 Davis Cup played the matches in the Play-off round. The matches were played at Culture Park Tennis Court, Izmir, Turkey from 21st to 23rd July 2000. Lithuania played the first set of matches against Turkey. Rolandas Murashka from Lithuania defeated Turkey’s Efe Ustundag by 7-5, 6-0 and 6-4. Turkey’s Mustafa Azkara defeated Lithuania’s Aivaras Balzekas by 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 and 9-7. Lithuania’s pair was defeated by Turkey’s pair by 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1. Turkey’s Efe Ustundag defeated Aivaras Balzekas by 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-4. Lithuania’s Rolandas Murashka was defeated by Turkey’s Baris Ergun by 6-3, 4-6 and 6-7. Lithuania was able to win single match. The 1st round matches were played from 28th to 30th April. Lithuania played the matches against Cote D’lvoire at Siauliai Tennis Court, Lithuania.

Claude N’Goran N’Goran defeated Lithuania’s Aivaras Balzekas by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2. Lithuania’s Rolandas Murashka defeated Valentin Sanon from Cote D’lvoire by 7-6, 7-5 and 6-3. Pair of Cote D’lvoire defeated Lithuania’s pair by 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 and 6-4. Lithuania’s Aivaras Balzekas defeated Valentin Sanon by 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4. Claude N’Goran N’Goran defeated Rolandas Murashka by 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4. Lithuania lost 3 matches against Cote D’lvoire. They could win 2 matches. Hence they didn’t forward to the 2nd round.

The performance of Lithuania at the 2000 Davis Cup was very disappointing. It resulted in relegation of Lithuania to Group III in 2001.
