Ethiopia at the 2000 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup was started on one summer day in August at the Boston’s Longwood Cricket Club in 1900. The Davis Cup is the largest annual international competition in which there is battle between the players of two nations for supremacy. The Davis Cup tournaments are contested by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) between teams of players from nations in the knockout format. Initially these tournaments were known by the name International Lawn Tennis Challenge but were renamed as Davis Cup in 1945. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament.

 
In the 2000 Davis Cup total of 135 nations had participated. The zones were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each of regional zones was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. Ethiopia at the 2000 Davis Cup competed in the Euro/African Zone. It was included in Group IV. The team of Ethiopia was as follows:

Countries at the 2000 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Ethiopia in the group IV of the Euro/African zone were as follows: Cyprus, Djibouti, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, San Marino, Uganda, Zambia, Algeria, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Cameroon, Ghana, Liechtenstein, Mauritius and Sudan.

Participation and Performance of Ethiopia in the 2000 Davis Cup

Ethiopia at the 2000 Davis Cup played matches against Zambia, Namibia and San Marino. On 20th January Zambia was against Ethiopia in the Round Robin matches. In the matches Ethiopia could not show good performance and was defeated by the team of Zambia. Ethiopia could only win one match and lost two matches in this round.

On 22nd January Ethiopia played matches against Namibia of the Round Robin stage. In these matches team of Ethiopia could not win any match of this round. All the three matches of this Round were won by Namibia. Thus Namibia defeated Ethiopia by score of 3-0.

On 23rd January Ethiopia was against San Marino in the Round Robin matches. San Marino team put up good performance and defeated Ethiopia by 2-1. The details of the matches are as follows: In the first match, Y.Setegnwandimu of Ethiopia defeated W.Forcellini of San Marino in the straight sets by 6-3 and 6-1. In the second match D.Vicini of San Marino put up good performance and defeated S. Woldegebriel of Ethiopia. In the doubles match, A.Della Balda and D.Vicini of San Marino defeated M.Asfaw and S.Woldegebriel of Ethiopia. Thus Ethiopia could win only one match in this Round.
