Introduction

The Davis Cup was started on one summer day in August at the Boston’s Longwood Cricket Club in 1900. The Davis Cup is the largest annual international competition in which there is battle between the players of two nations for supremacy. The Davis Cup tournaments are contested by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) between teams of players from nations in the knockout format. Initially these tournaments were known by the name International Lawn Tennis Challenge but were renamed as Davis Cup in 1945. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament.

 
In the 2000 Davis Cup total of 135 nations had participated. The zones were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each of regional zones was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. Dominican Republic at the 2000 Davis Cup competed in the American Zone. It was included in Group III. The team of Dominican Republic was as follows:

Dominican Republic at the 2000 Davis Cup played three Round Robin matches, 1 First Round match and the final. On 22 March Dominican Republic played first matches of the Round Robin. In these matches, Dominican Republic was against Trinidad and Tobago team. In these matches Trinidad and Tobago defeated Dominican Republic by winning two matches. Dominican Republic could win only one match.

On 23rd March Dominican Republic played matches against Bolivia of the Round Robin. In these matches Dominican Republic made wonderful performance and defeated Bolivia by the score of 2-1. Dominican Republic won singles and Doubles match of this Round Robin.

On 24th March Dominican Republic played matches against team of Netherlands Antilles. In these matches, Netherlands Antilles proved to be good performer than Dominican Republic. Netherlands Antilles won two matches and lost the doubles match of this Round. Thus Netherlands Antilles defeated Dominican Republic by 2-1. On 25th March Dominican Republic played matches against Puerto Rico in the 1st Round. In these matches also performance of Dominican Republic was good. They defeated Puerto Rico by 2-1 in this round.

On 26th March Dominican Republic played the final match against Netherlands Antilles. In these matches, Dominican Republic was defeated by Netherlands Antilles by the score of 2-1. In the first match of this round E.Gerth of Netherlands Antilles defeated G.de.Leon of Dominican Republic. In the second match, J.Roger of Netherlands Antilles defeated R.Vallejo of Dominican Republic. In the doubles match, S.Camacho and V.Estrella of Dominican Republic put up dominant performance and defeated R.Behr and K.Jonckheer of Netherlands Antilles. Thus Dominican Republic was able to win only one match in this round.
