Denmark at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup was started on one summer day in August at the Boston’s Longwood Cricket Club in 1900. The Davis Cup is the largest annual international competition in which there is battle between the players of two nations for supremacy. The Davis Cup tournaments are contested by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) between teams of players from nations in the knockout format. Initially these tournaments were known by the name International Lawn Tennis Challenge but were renamed as Davis Cup in 1945. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament.

 
In the 2000 Davis Cup total of 135 nations had participated. The zones were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each of regional zones was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. Denmark at the 2000 Davis Cup competed in the Euro/African Zone. It was included in Group II. The team of Denmark was as follows:

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Denmark in the group II of the Euro/African zone were as follows: Bulgaria, Cote D’Ivoire, Croatia, Egypt, Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey.

Participation and Performance of Denmark in the 2000 Davis Cup

Denmark at the 2000 Davis Cup played matches against Cote D’Ivoire and Turkey. There were five matches organized in each round. On 30th April Denmark team played matches against Turkey of the 1st Round. Denmark team made excellent performance and won three matches. The details of the matches in this round are as follows: In the first match, F.Fetterlein of Denmark defeated E.Oral of Turkey in the sets by 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0. K.Pless of Denmark defeated E.Ustundag of Turkey. In the doubles match, pair of Turkey M.Azkara and E.Oral defeated J.Printzlau and K.Pless of Denmark. In the fourth match K.Pless of Denmark defeated E.Oral of Turkey in the straight sets of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4. In the fifth match B.Ergun of Turkey defeated B.Borella of Denmark. Thus Denmark defeated Turkey by 3-2 and advanced to the Quarterfinals.

On 23rd July Denmark played matches against Cote D’Ivoire in the Quarterfinals. In these matches Cote D’Ivoire defeated Denmark by 3-2. The details of the matches are as follows: In the first match C.N’Goran N.Goran of Cote D’Ivoire defeated K.Pless of Denmark in the sets by 7-6(4), 6-2, and 6-3. In the second match, V.Sanson defeated F.Fetterlein of Denmark. The third match was won by I.Lonfo and C.N’Goran N’Goran of Cote D’Ivoire defeated F.Fetterlein and K.Pless of Denmark. In the fourth match, P.Langvardt of Denmark defeating V.Sanon of Cote D’Ivoire in the sets by 7-5 and 6-0. In the fifth match, B.Borella of Denmark defeated I.Lonfo of Cote D’Ivoire in the sets by 6-2 and 6-3. Thus Denmark could reach only till the Quarterfinals of the 2000 Davis Cup.
