Cuba at the 2000 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup was started on one summer day in August at the Boston’s Longwood Cricket Club in 1900. The Davis Cup is the largest annual international competition in which there is battle between the players of two nations for supremacy. The Davis Cup tournaments are contested by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) between teams of players from nations in the knockout format. Initially these tournaments were known by the name International Lawn Tennis Challenge but were renamed as Davis Cup in 1945. The 2000 Davis Cup was the 89th edition of this prestigious tournament.

 
In the 2000 Davis Cup total of 135 nations had participated. The zones were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each of regional zones was divided into four groups. Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. Cuba at the 2000 Davis Cup competed in the American Zone. It was included in Group II. The team of Cuba was as follows:

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Cuba in the group II of the American zone were as follows: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Participation and Performance of Cuba in the 2000 Davis Cup

Cuba at the 2000 Davis Cup played matches in two rounds. There are five matches in each round. In the play off round Cuba played matches against Costa Rica. The matches were contested from 7th April to 9th April. The details of the playoff round are as follows: The first match was won by L.Navarro-Batles of Cuba defeating R.Avalos-Brenes of Costa Rica in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4. In the second match, J.Marin of Croatia defeated K.Leon-Zamora of Cuba in the sets by 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2. The doubles match was won by Costa Rica pair F.Camacho and J.Marin defeating S.Martinez –Breijo and L.Navarro-Batles in the sets by 7-6(4), 6-4, 5-7, 5-7 and 6-3. The fourth match was won by J.Marin of Costa Rica defeating L.Navarro-Batles of Cuba in the sets by 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-4. In the fifth match Ricardo Chile-Fonte of Cuba defeated Rafel Avalos-Brenes of Costa Rica in the sets by 6-4and 6-0. Thus in the playoff round Cuba could only win 2 matches.

In the first round, Cuba played matches against Guatemala. These matches were contested from 4th Feb to 6th Feb. In this round Cuba was able to win only one match rest all the matches were won by the team of Guatemala. The details of the matches are as follows: In the first match Jacobo Chavez of Guatemala defeated Lazaro Navarro-Batles of Cuba. The second match was also won by Luis Perez-Chete of Guatemala defeating Sandor Martinez-Breijo of Cuba. In the doubles match, Daniel Chavez Morales and Luis Perez-Chete of Guatemala defeated Cuba’s pair. In the fourth match, Luis Perez-Chete of Guatemala defeated Kerlin Leon-Zamora of Cuba. The fifth match was won by Sandor Martinez-Breijo of Cuba defeating Jorge-Minoda Tejada of Guatemala. Thus in this round Guatemala defeated Cuba by score of 4-1 and the competition was ended for Cuba’s team.
