Belarus at the 1997 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup was the most crucial championship between national teams in men’s tennis. Group IV began with the regional zones and there was promotion and relegation between this zone and Group III. Belarus at the 1997 Davis Cup took part at the zonal level. Belarus took part in the Davis Cup for the first time in 1994. At least one player from Belarus, Sergei Leonyuk, had earlier played for the Soviet Union. The Belarus Davis Cup team represents Belarus in Davis cup tennis competition. The team is governed by the Belarus Tennis Association. In 2007, the country takes part in the World Group for the 4th successive year. Upto 2006, Belarus is the only team that has never relegated from the World Group.

The other countries in this group were Cote d’lvoire, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Ghana, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Yugoslavia. The first round match was against Ireland. The host was Ireland and the surface was Hard – Indoor. The date of the matches was 4 May 1997. Belarus defeated Ireland by a score of 4-1. In the quarter final, the opponent was Finland. The host was Finland and the surface was Clay – Outdoor. Belarus was defeated by Finland by a score of 2-3.

Considering that Belarus was a relatively new entrant in the Davis cup, its performance was not very bad.
