Introduction

Davis Cup was formerly known as the International Tennis Federation. It found its roots in a tennis showdown that was set between Great Britain and the United States. Four tennis players of the Harvard University conceived the idea of this match. This idea was actually conceived in the year 1899 but was materialized in the year 1900. Thus 1900 marked the beginning of the Davis Cup. This tournament was later renamed after Dwight F. Davis who played a major role in the development of the game. He designed the complete format of the game and was also a part of the historic tennis showdown in 1900. Thus after his death this tournament was renamed as the Davis Cup.
