1992 Davis Cup

Introduction

Davis Cup is the premier international event in men's tennis. It began in the year 1900 between the United States and Great Britain. Earlier it used to be called as International Lawn Tennis Challenge. In the year 1945 International lawn Tennis Challenge was renamed Davis Cup following the death of Dwight F. Davis. Dwight F. Davis along with three members from Harvard University tennis team had conceived the idea of International Lawn tennis Challenge in 1899. The United States has remained the most successful nation at Davis Cup to date with 31 titles followed by Australia with 28 titles. ITF, International Tennis Federation organizes Davis Cup every year and decides host nations for all the matches before the start of each year's tournament. The 1992 Davis Cup witnessed total 92 nations participating in the tournament. As compare to its earlier editions the 1992 Davis Cup tournament included largest number of entries and therefore the tournament expanded to add one more Group in all zones. With the addition of one more group, each zone had total 3 Groups.

1992 Davis Cup Statistics

The 1992 Davis Cup saw nail biting matches and witnessed some brilliant performances. The United States raced to the finals beating Sweden 4-1 in semifinals, while Switzerland displayed impressive performance against Brazil and recorded 5-0 victory to enter into the finals. The United States put down Switzerland's challenge by 3-1 in the finals and clinched the title. In World Group Qualifying Round Denmark carved out 3-2 victory over Argentina, Austria managed to beat Canada by 3-1, Germany smashed Belgium by 5-0 and Cuba got a walk over victory from Yugoslavia. While Spain subdued Israel by 3-0, India left the mighty Great Britain in dust by 4-1, CSI trounced South Korea by 5-0 and Netherlands scripted 4-1 victory over Uruguay.

1992 Davis Cup Summary

The 1992 Davis Cup witnessed spectacular performance from the United States. Switzerland finished as runner up. Austria, CIS, Cuba, Denmark, India, Germany, Netherlands and Spain managed to book 1993 World Group place. While Israel, South Korea, Uruguay, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain and Yugoslavia were relegated to Group 1 in 1993 Davis Cup.
