Introduction

The famed Davis Cup initiated in the year 1899 when the notion was foreseen by a team of four tennis players from the Harvard. The opening match was played in Boston, Massachusetts between the Great Britain and the United States. Initially it was called the International Lawn Tennis Challenge but was renamed as the Davis Cup in the fond memory of Dwight Davis who was one of the former members. The countries are segregated into zonal groups and have to hold on to a knock-out format that’s been prescribed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
