Introduction

The Davis Cup is one of the largest sporting events in the history of the men's tennis. Some members of the Harvard University Tennis Team tried to arrange a tennis match with the British team in 1899. This idea was given approval by the lawn tennis association and hence forth Dwight Davis went on to design a tournament format. In the year 1900 the first tennis match was played between United States and Great Britain. At this time of period the tournament was called the international lawn tennis challenge, initially in 1945 it was renamed as the Davis cup following the death of Dwight Davis. United States and Australia are the two teams who have won this competition for number of times that is 31 and 28 respectively. The 1992 Davis Cup was the 81st edition of the most important sporting event in the men's tennis. In this year's competition there were more teams than the previous years, as a result there was an addition of one more group that is group 3 in all the respective zones. All together there were about 92 teams taking part in this competition and Bangladesh at the 1992 Davis Cup was one on them.

Bangladesh at the 1992 Davis Cup was one of the participants in the Asia/Oceania zone group2. The first match for Bangladesh was against Sri Lanka at the Nat'l Tennis Centre in Colombo. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh in this match by four games to one. Then in the next match against Pakistan at the National tennis complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh were defeated by four games to one. Losing against Pakistan in the play-off match Bangladesh were relegated to the group 3 in the 1993 Davis Cup.
