Introduction

Formulated by just four tennis players of America studying at Harvard with a view to outplay the British, the Davis cup tournament Tennis is today’s most cherished and grandest of all tennis team events. It’s exclusively for males and goes by a knock-out system in which the different teams participate in various regional zones and then after the preliminary rounds advance to the inter-zonal rounds and the Challenge Round. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the legal body that looks after the functioning and the execution of the Davis cup tournament Tennis.

 
The tournament was known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge previously and the name was changed only in 1945 and the tournament was renamed in the fond memory of the former member Dwight F. Davis. The 1991 Davis Cup was its 80th version and was celebrated with full zest and fervor all over the world.

1991 Davis Cup Statistics

Almost about 87 teams contested for the cup in their corresponding zones. The results for the World Group qualifying rounds are as follows. The Brazil, Netherlands, Switzerland and the Great Britain teams marked a place for themselves in the World Group for the year 1992. The nations of Belgium, Canada, Sweden and Italy were lucky enough to retain their place amongst the prestigious 16 World Group teams. In the Americas Zone, Peru was relegated to Group II and on the other hand Chile got upgraded to Group I. In the Asia/Oceania Zone, Philippines and India managed to reach the World Group’s qualifying round. In the same group China was demoted to Group II and Chinese Taipei managed to make it through to Group I. Similarly in the Euro/African Zone the teams representing Ireland and Morocco were put down to Group II and Kenya was promoted to Group I. Norway in the Europe Zone was promoted to Group I. The final round was played between France and the United States and in a surprising way France snatched off the show with a score of 3-1. France won this coveted title only after 1932.
