Zambia at the 1991 Davis Cup

The Davis cup tournament Tennis was earlier known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge. After the death of Dwight Davis in 1945, it was called as the Davis Cup. From 1950 to 1967, Australia won the cup 15 times in 18 years. The United States has won this tournament the maximum number of times. It is followed by Australia, France, Great Britain, Sweden and Australasia. The 1991 Davis Cup was the 80th edition of the tournament. The Davis cup tournament Tennis was the most important tournament between national teams in men’s tennis. Overall, 87 nations took part in the tournament. Zambia at the 1991 Davis Cup took part at the zonal level.

Zambia at the 1991 Davis Cup took part in the Africa Zone – Group II of the Euro / African Zone. The other countries in this zone were Algeria, Cameroon, Congo, Cote d’lvoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and Zimbabwe. The first round match was against Cameroon. The date for the matches was 3 February 1991. The host was Zambia and the surface was Clay – Outdoor. Zambia defeated Cameroon by a score of 3-2. The quarter final was against Nigeria. The matches were contested on 31 March 1991. The host was Zambia and the surface was Clay – Outdoor. Zambia was defeated by Nigeria by a score of 2-3.

Zambia at the 1991 Davis Cup was only in its second year of participation in the Davis cup tournament Tennis. Considering this fact, it put up a modest show in the 1991 Davis Cup. In the first round, it actually defeated Cameroon by a very narrow margin. Had the country lost one more match, it would be eliminated from the competition. But, it lost only two matches and advanced to the quarter final. In the quarter final, it was defeated by the same narrow margin against Nigeria. After these matches it was eliminated from the competition.
