The actual concept of the challenging tennis showdown was from four members of Harvard University who adopted the knock-out format for this tournament in 1899. But currently the tournament is under the guidance of International Tennis Federation (ITF). This tournament is one of the prestigious and exciting tennis tournaments only meant for men. It was actually started as a challenge match between United States and Great Britain in 1900 at Boston, Massachusetts. Previously called as International Lawn Tennis Challenge, it was renamed in the name of an American Tennis player who played an important role in the formation of Davis cup tournament Tennis,

 
Dwight Davis after his death in 1945. Dwight F. Davis was one of the key founders of this tournament who contributed most to this tournament. Sweden at the 1991 Davis Cup was on of the 87 teams in the 1991 Davis Cup. The 1991 Davis Cup was 80th tournament from the beginning of the series.

Performance of Sweden at the 1991 Davis Cup

As Sweden got through the World Group Qualifying Round in 1990 championship, Sweden at the 1991 Davis Cup got a grant to play in the World Group of this event. In the first round, it had to face Yugoslavia. But it was defeated by Yugoslavia with a score line of 1-4. This led to Sweden to relegate to World Group Qualifying Round. In this round it played against Philippines. But it was not able to get through at least a single match. So, Philippines won the round and dominated the entire round by getting victory in all five matches. Even though it lost the round, it managed to remain in the World Group of 1991 Davis Cup.
