Paraguay at the 1991 Davis Cup

Dwight F. Davis along with his three friends from Harvard University tennis team put forward the idea of holding team event between the United States and Great Britain in 1899. Actual tournament came true in 1900 and the United States managed to beat Great Britain hollow by 3-0 at Boston, Massachusetts. ITF governs the functioning of Davis cup tournament Tennis. ITF determines elite World Group of 16 nations before the start of each year’s tournament and determines schedule of the tournament. Every nation aspires to compete in World Group. Those who can not make it to the World Group took part in the tournament from different regional Zones.

Paraguay at the 1991 Davis Cup was placed in America Zone Group 1 along with Brazil, Cuba, Paraguay and Uruguay. Paraguay was gifted with first round bye and faced Cuba in the semifinals. Cuba was powerful side as compare to Paraguay and was predicted winner. Paraguay displayed some shine in the first singles but could not give fine finish to the match. R. Alvarenga of Paraguay exhausted himself in a marathon match but to no avail. Cuba took 2-0 lead on the first day of the tie winning both the singles by 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. This was enough to unnerve Paraguay and then Cuba never allowed Paraguay to put any resistance. Paraguay went down to Cuba by 5-0 and their challenge in the tournament came to an end.

Paraguay at the 1991 Davis Cup put up very poor showing. Their half hearted efforts facilitated their early exit from the tournament. Paraguay suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Cuba and did not add any color to the match which took away spectator’s joy. Paraguay remained in the same group for 1992 Davis Cup.
