1989 Davis Cup

Introduction

Davis Cup began in 1900 as a challenge between the United States and Great Britain with the name ‘International Lawn Tennis Challenge’. Dwight F. Davis and three tennis players from Harvard University conceived the idea of the tournament in 1899. Dwight F. Davis designed the structure of the tournament and even spent money from his own pocket to purchase the silver trophy for the tournament. Boston, Massachusetts witnessed first match of the tournament in 1900 between the United States and Great Britain. Dwight F. Davis captained the United States team and pulled off 3-0 victory over Great Britain to clinch the first title.

 
When Dwight Davis died in 1945 the International Lawn Tennis Challenge was renamed Davis Cup as a tribute to this tennis legend. The 1989 Davis Cup was remembered for West Germany’s remarkable victory over Sweden in the finals.

1989 Davis Cup Statistics

The 1989 Davis Cup was the 78th edition of the most renowned tournament in men’s tennis. West Germany continued their previous year’s form and displayed spectacular performance to clinch their second Davis Cup title. West Germany recorded sensational 3-2 victory over Sweden in the finals. Peru and Argentina entered World Group Qualifying Round from America Zone beating Brazil 3-2 and Canada 3-0. Netherlands and South Korea advanced to World Group Qualifying round from Asia/Oceania Zone. World Group Qualifying Round witnessed spectacular matches. In WC Qualifying Round Argentina carve out 3-2 victory over Great Britain, Australia outclassed Peru by 3-2, Italy and New Zealand managed to beat Denmark and Hungary by 4-1. Netherlands washed out Indonesia by 5-0, Israel put down South Korean attack by 4-1, Mexico smashed Soviet Union by 4-1 and Switzeland inflicted a crushing 5-0 defeat on Paraguay.

1989 Davis Cup Summary

The 1989 Davis Cup witnessed West Germany’s marvelous performance. This Davis Cup met the 1988’s finalist again on the court competing for the title. West Germany succeeded in repeating last year’s performance and Sweden once again suffered setback. Argentina, Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland could book their place in 1990 World Group. Australia, Israel, Italy and Mexico too could secure 1990 World Group place. While Denmark, Indonesia, Paraguay, Soviet Union, Great Britain, Hungary,Peru and South Korea were relegated to Group 1 in 1990 Davis Cup.
