Davis Cup is the premier international tennis tournament that is held only for men. This tournament is governed by the International Tennis Federation. So, most of the rules are framed by this federation. Davis Cup ranks high in popularity and reception among the tennis events. It is the single largest event of men’s tennis in which teams of competing countries advance to higher rungs by knocking the opponents out. Davis cup was initiated by Dwight Davis along with his friends at Harvard as a challenge tennis showdown between the USA and Great Britain in 1899. The first game was played in 1900. The name ‘Davis Cup’ was given in 1945 after the death of the champ Davis. In 1981 the format of the event was modified with the introduction of the elite World Group. The 76th edition of the Davis cup was played in the year 1987. In the 1987 Davis Cup a total of 71 teams entered the competition. The World Group had its usual 16 teams. The European Zone that includes 11 in the Africa Zone had 32 teams playing in it. 13 entered the Eastern Zone and 11 in the America Zone. The final was on 18-20 December. Sweden and India clashed in the final. Sweden won the final defeating India. The final game was held at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg of Sweden.

Sweden and India steadily progressed to the final defeating the opposing teams in the previous rounds. Sweden Defeated Italy in the first round, France in the quarterfinal and reached the semifinals. In the semi final Sweden Defeated Spain with a score line 3-2. This round was played on clay court in Barcelona, Spain. India defeated Argentina in the first round and Israel in the second round. The third round was a clash against the tennis giants Australia. India toped the round with a close score line 3-2. This game was played on grass court in Sydney, Australia. India stood a great wrestle against the titans of tennis in their home grounds. The final was not a happy one for India. Sweden won the final tie with an absolute dominance. It swept away all the five scores leaving India empty handed. The final tie was held at Gothenburg, Sweden on indoor clay courts. The 5-0 win in the final was a great reason for celebration for Sweden fans.

1987 Davis Cup was again won by Sweden. In the R1 Mats Wilander defeated Ramesh Krishnan with a steady set score 6-4 6-1 6-3. In the second game R2 Anders Jarryd had a similar victory of 6-3 6-3 6-1. In the doubles round Joakim Nystrom and Mats Wilander pair defeated Anand Amritraj and Vijay Amritraj pair 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-2. In R4 Anders Jarryd had a quick win over Ramesh Krishnan 6-4 6-3. In the last swap Mats Wilander grounded Indian ace Vijay Amritraj by 6-2 6-0
