The tournament was initiated from a scratch by four Harvard university tennis players who challenged the British for the ultimate tennis showdown. They funded the tournament amongst them and inevitably started a competition that is now considered to be one of the toughest in tennis.

In the quarterfinals again, United States, Australia, Czechoslovakia and Sweden qualifies for the semifinals by defeated their opponents convincingly. They competed against each other in the semifinals, where, only Australia and Sweden managed to get past the obstacles and qualify for the finals of the tournament. Finally, in the defining finals, it was Australia, who managed to beat Sweden with the score line of 3-2 to win the tournament effectively at the 1986 Davis cup.
