1970 Davis Cup saw an increase in the number of participants. 53 teams took part in the tournament. Out of this 31 nations played in the Europe Zone and 11 in the America Zone. A total of 11 teams participated from the Eastern Zone. Canada defeated New Zealand from the North America zone. Brazil defeated Columbia in the 3-2.
In the America Inter Zone final, Brazil defeated Canada in a closely contested match 3-2. In the Eastern Zone, Australia defeated Japan and won the Zone A final. India defeated Ceylon and won the Zone B final.
In the Eastern Inter zone final, India defeated Australia 3-1. In the Europe Zone, the Zone A final was won by West German team. They defeated the Soviet Union and moved on to the Inter Zone final. In the final round of Zone B matches, Spain defeated Yugoslavia 1-4 and qualified for the Inter Zonal round.
In the Inter Zone Final, West Germany defeated Spain 4-1 and qualified for the Challenge Round. In the Challenge Round, the United States completely dominated the event by defeating West Germany 5-0.
