Introduction
The Davis competition is perhaps the toughest and the most enchanting tennis competition for men. This tournament can be traced way back in 1899, when four Harvard university tennis players challenged the British for the ultimate tennis knockdown. This idea gave rise to the fantastic tournament, which is based exclusively on the knock out format. This tournament is held every year under the international tennis federation. Over the years, the organizers and players were stunned to see the amazing reviews the tournament received from passionate tennis players all over the world. In 1961, this support was felt most prominently. The 1961 Davis cup was the 50th edition of the tournament. Overall, 42 teams participated in the competition which were placed into three major zones. In the Eastern Zone, some significant participants included India, Japan, Thailand and Philippines. Finally the Europe Zone, included participants like Australia, Italy, Hungary and Sweden.

The first important stage of the tournament was indeed the Zone final. In the Americas Zone, United States defeated Mexico with the score line of 3-2. Meanwhile, in the Eastern Zone, it was India, who managed to defeat Japan with the score line of 4 -1. Finally, in the Europe Zone, Italy easily defeated Sweden with the score line for 4-1. These winners then moved on into the Inter - Zonal Zone. Here, in the first round, Italy proceeded directly in the second round because of the bye. On the other hand, USA defeated India convincingly with the score line of 3-2. Finally, Italy met Australia in the grand Challenge round. This ultimate round was to decide the champion of the Davis cup tournament. In final few breathless moments, it was all over in the favor of Australia.
