Introduction

Davis Cup was also formerly known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge. It was later renamed as the Davis Cup after the death of Dwight F. Davis who played a major role in the formulation of this tournament. He actually designed the format of this tournament. This tournament like other Grand Slam tournaments also follows the knock out policy. However the format is completely different. This tournament started as a challenge between United States and Great Britain. Gradually it materialized into a full fledged tournament. The 1960 Davis Cup was the 49th edition of this tournament. The final of this tournament was held at the White City Stadium which is located in Sydney that is situated in Australia.

1960 Davis Cup saw the participation of 40 teams all around the round. Amongst these 40 nations, 28 teams took parting this tournament from the Europe Zone and 6 nations participated through the America Zone. There were a total of 6 teams that participated from the Eastern Zone. In the America Zone, it was classified into North America and South America zone. United States qualified from the North America and Venezuela qualified from the South America Zone to the America Inter zonal final. In the America Inter Zone, United States easily defeated Venezuela. The score line was 5-0. In the Eastern Zone Philippines won the Eastern Zone final after it defeated India. The score line was 3-0. In the Europe Zone final Italy competed against Sweden. Italy defeated Sweden by 3-2. In the Inter Zonal Final Italy and United States contested in which Italy won the round very closely. The score line was 3-2. Thus qualifying to the Challenge Round Italy competed against defending champion Australia. However Australia defeated Italy by a score line of 4-1.

1960 Davis Cup Summary

1960 Davis Cup was again won by Australia. Australia thus retaining the title defeated Italy quite easily. This time United States was not able to qualify to the Challenge Round. However Italy making its way to the final round was not capable of matching the standards to compete against Australia.
