Introduction

The Davis Cup Tennis Tournament is the premier international tennis event that is held only for men. This tournament actually started as a challenge between United States and Great Britain.

The idea of this tournament was conceived in the year 1899 but was materialized in the year 1900. This idea was conceived by four tennis players of the Harvard University.

Amongst them Dwight F. Davis was the person who played a major role. He actually designed the complete format of this tournament.

 

So this tournament which was formerly known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge was renamed as the Davis Cup Tennis Tournament in honor of Dwight F. Davis.

This tournament is governed by the International Tennis Federation. The 1959 Davis Cup Tennis Tournament was the 48th edition of this tournament.

The finals of this tournament were held at the West Side Tennis Club in the Forest Hills that is situated in New York which is situated in the United States.

1959 Davis Cup Statistics

1959 Davis Cup Tennis Tournament saw the participation of 42 nations. This year the number of participants was even more than the previous year.

Out of these 27 nations participated from the Europe zone and 8 teams participated from the Eastern Zone. There were 7 nations that took part in this tournament from the America Zone.

In the Americas Zone there were two categories namely the North America Draw and the South America Draw. Australia qualified to the Inter Zonal from the North America Draw and Cuba qualified from the South America Draw.

The America Inter Zone Final was won by Australia after it defeated Cuba by a score line of 5-0.

In the Eastern zone the final was contested between India and Philippines. India dominated the round by defeating Philippines by 5-0.

In the Europe zone Italy competed against Spain in the zone final and defeated Spain. The score line was 4-1.

In the Inter zone final India was defeated by Australia by a score line of 1-4. Then Australia competed against United States in the Challenge Round.

Australia defeated United States in a very close match by 3-2.

1959 Davis Cup Summary

1959 Davis Cup Tennis Tournament was again won by Australia. United States could not retain its title for one year also. Australia took away the title again and made an eventful comeback.
