Introduction

Davis Cup is the premier annual tennis tournament that is held only for Men. This tournament actually started as a challenge between United States and Great Britain. The idea of this tennis showdown was actually conceived in the year 1899 and was materialized in the year 1900. This idea was conceived by four tennis players from the Harvard University. Amongst then Dwight F. Davis played a very important role. He actually formulated this complete tournament and also was a part of the match that was played between United States and Great Britain. Davis Cup was formerly named as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge but was later named as the Davis Cup after the death of Dwight F. Davis in 1945. This tournament is governed by the International Tennis Federation. This tennis event also follows the knock out format like other Grand Slams but the format of play is completely different. The 1957 Davis Cup was the 46th edition of this most important tournament for Men. The final of this tournament was held at the Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne which is located in Australia.

1957 Davis Cup saw the participation of 36 teams. Out of these teams 24 teams participated in the Europe zone and 7 teams participated in the America zone. There were a total of teams in the Eastern Zone. In the America Zone final the event was completely dominated by United States. United States defeated Brazil very easily by a score line of 5-0. In the Eastern zone final Philippines competed against Japan. It defeated Japan by a score line of 3-2. In the Europe zone final Belgium defeated Italy in a very close match by 3-2. The Inter Zonal final was contested by Belgium and United States. United States won the final closely by a score line of 3-2. Thus it qualified to the Challenge Round where it competed against defending Champion Australia. It lost to Australia by 2-3.

1957 Davis Cup again saw United States making all its way from the America Zone to the Challenge Round. But this time also it wasn’t so lucky. Thus Australia was again declared the champion of this tournament this year also.
