Davis Cup is the largest annual international event that is held in the sport of tennis. This tournament was started as a challenge between United States and Great Britain. Though the idea was conceived in the year 1899, it was actually materialized in the year 1900. So this year was marked as the beginning of the Davis Cup. This tournament is governed by the International Tennis federation. This tournament also follows the knock out format. However the format is completely different. The 1956 Davis Cup was the 45th edition of this tournament. The final of this tournament was held at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre which is located in Adelaide in Australia.

1956 Davis Cup saw the participation of 32 nations all over the world. This year there were two less teams in the tournament. From these there were 24 nations that participated in the Europe zone and 5 teams that took part in this tournament from the America Zone. There were three nations in the Eastern zone. Thus this year the tournament was classified into America zone, Europe zone, Eastern zone, Inter zone and Challenge Round. The America zone final was contested between the United States and Mexico. United States easily defeated Mexico by a score line of 4-1. The Eastern zone final was won by India. India defeated Japan by a score line of 3-2. In the Europe zone final Italy competed against Sweden. Italy won the final round by defeating Sweden by a score line of 5-0. In the Inter zone final India competed against United States. However, United States completely dominated the round and defeated India by a score line of 4-1. It then qualified to the Challenge Round. United States competed against Australia which was the previous year champion. However Australia defeated United States by a score line of 5-0.

1956 Davis Cup saw some less nations participating in this tournament. The Challenge Round was a one sided match. This time also all the efforts of the players of United States were in vain and Australia retained its title.
