The Davis Cup is undoubtedly the most crucial tournament between national teams in men’s tennis. The 1955 Davis Cup was the 44th edition of this tournament. Due to increasing entries from Asia the Eastern Zone was reinstated. A total of 34 teams were allowed to compete in the tournament. Out of these 24 were in the Europe Zone, 7 in the Americas Zone and 3 in the Eastern Zone. Netherlands at the 1955 Davis Cup contested through the Europe Zone. Thus the loss of only one match caused them to be eliminated from the competition. Had they won one more match, they would be required to face Sweden in the second round, which had received a bye in the first round. Although Netherlands was eliminated in the first round, it happened so by a small margin and that was a source of solace for its supporters.
