Introduction

Davis Cup is the premier international event that is held annually. This event is especially for men only. This tournament actually found its origin from a challenge between United States and Great Britain. The idea of this tournament was conceived in the year 1899 by four tennis players of the Harvard University. This match was held in Boston which is situated in Massachusetts. The idea was however materialized in the year 1900 so this year marked the beginning of the Davis Cup. This tournament was formerly known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge. It was renamed as the Davis Cup in the year 1945 after the death of Dwight F. Davis. He was the key person behind the success of Davis Cup as a tournament. He actually designed the complete tournament. The 1954 Davis Cup was the 43rd edition of this tournament. The final event of this tournament was held in Sydney which is situated in Australia.

1954 Davis Cup Statistics

1954 Davis Cup saw the participation of 30 teams all over the world. This time there were more participants from previous year. From these 30 nations, 23 teams participated from the Europe Zone and 7 teams participated from the America Zone. The Eastern Zone was abandoned for this year. Because of this India who would have been the only participant in the Eastern Zone was moved to the Europe Zone. Thus this year the tournament was categorized into America Zone, Europe Zone, Inter Zone and Challenge Round. In the America zone final United States competed against Mexico. United States defeated Mexico by a score line of 4-1. In the Europe zone final France competed against Sweden. Sweden completely dominated the final and defeated France by a score line of 5-0. The Inter Zonal Final was thus contested between the United States and Sweden. United States dominated the final completely and left no scope for the Sweden players to do anything. The score line was 5-0. United States qualifying to the Challenge Round won the round against defending champion Australia. The match was very close as United States defeated Australia by 3-2.

1954 Davis Cup Summary

1954 Davis Cup got a surprise victory from the United States. After three years of attempt by the players of United States, it finally won the title. Thus United States was declared the new champion of Davis Cup.
