The four members of the Harvard University tennis team started the tournament which was conceived in the year 1899 as to Challenge between Britain and the United States. The Davis Cup is run by the International Tennis Federation and the competition began in 1900 as a challenge between United States and Great Britain. Till date the most successful performer are the players from the United States by winning 31 tournaments, and finishing second 18 times. Toronto at the 1954 Davis Cup was one of the participants. This tournament like other Grand Slam events also follows the knock out format. However in its format it is different from other tennis tournaments.
