Sweden at the 1954 Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is one of the most revered men’s tennis competitions in the world. Today the governing body for the Davis Cup is ITF (International Tennis Federation). Sweden at the 1954 Davis Cup participated in the Europe zone and put up an extremely good show. 1954 marked the 43rd edition of he popular Davis Cup. The United States of America somehow managed to defeat the four year winner Australia in the Challenge round and bring back their lost glory.

Sweden managed to get a bye in the very first round itself as it was quarterfinalist in the 1953. In the 2nd round Sweden faced Egypt. They best Egypt hollow in five straight matches. Egypt couldn’t manage a single win. Sweden then in the zonal quarterfinal played against Italy on the clay courts of Stockholm that’s the capital of Sweden. Again they relished an undoubted victory with a win of straight five matches. Then in the semifinal round Sweden had a tough fight while playing opposite Belgium. Belgium was able to upset the Sweden in two matches but then they managed to regain control by overpowering Belgium in three matches. The zonal final was played between France and Sweden. It was a cake-walk for Sweden as they again managed a five match victory against France and qualified to the Inter-zonal final against the US. Here they faced a miserable defeat as they lost all the five matches. This ended the journey of Sweden at the 1954 Davis Cup.

Sweden at the 1954 Davis Cup portrayed an excellent show and managed to reach inter- zonal finals also. In the first round they were endowed with a bye as they were 1953’s quarter finalists. They played extremely well throughout the tournament and trounced the good teams like France and Belgium. They faced their final defeat only against the Davis Cup’s champion team –the United Stated. Sweden displayed high commitment for the game and were able to prove their expertise efficiently through all the rounds.
