Sailing Information

Fundamentals Of Sailing

Sailing is a fabulous game of sports world that involves sailing sailboats on water bodies with wind’s assistance. Sailing information is a must to understand this sport better. Size of sailing sailboats craft is about 2.3m long and with a single sail area of 10.7 square m. Such type of craft is known as Optimistic which is sailed by young children.

The other type of sailing ship is known as Barque Sedov (world’s largest sailing vessel) is of length 117.5 m with four masted square rigged, with more than 28 sail boat having total area of 4000 square m. Sailing sport has two divisions one is racing in which crafts are grouped into different classes based on their sizes, types of rig, competing from an inland lake or river to oceans.

According to the collection of various sailing information, earlier sailing was used as one of mode of transportations. As per many sailing information, the oldest representation of ship appears in Egypt in around 3500 BC.

Improvements were done in the designs of sails, masts, navigational equipments etc. Sailing as means of transport originated in 17th century in Holland, from there it got popular in England by Charles II, and then spread in American colonies.

Then, it was joined as means of sport for social and recreational purpose in groups called yacht clubs. The first club was formed in 1720 at Cork in Ireland. Another club was formed in United States known as New York Yacht Club (NYYC) founded in 1844. After 1992 a new class of longer and lighter boats carrying sail with higher mast have been used in America's Cup races.

Ocean racing is, one of the dangerous sports, in long distance individual sport category and has gained popularity. Some of the major ocean racing events are Newport-Bermuda Race, Transpacific Race, Volvo Ocean Race. Nowadays, modern sailing boats are equipped with modern technology like advanced communication devices; satellites generated weather reports, global positioning system (GPS), etc.

Sailing Instruction

As specified by FINA swimming instruction for various types of events are:

  • When two sail boats approach each other, there are rules defined known as "right of way" for one boat and obligation for other boat known as "keep clear".The boat having right-of-way can sail the course.
  • There are four right-of-way rules, which are based on facts that there are four different relationships that the sailboat can have.
  • These relationships are:
    1. Boats can be on opposite tracks
    2. Boats can be on same track and overlapped
    3. Boats can be on same track and not overlapped
    4. Boats can be on changing tracks
  • If boats are on opposite tracks, the boat that is on starboard track has right of way.
  • If they are on same track they either can be overlapped. In that case leeward board has right of way with it.
  • If one boat is in front of other boat then boat which is in front has right of way.
  • If one boat is tacking, it should keep clear of other which is not.
  • There are limitations on what boats can do, one of such limitation is all boats have to avoid contact with others boats.Rules also specify that if right-of-way boats has contact and there is damage, they it can be penalized.
