Sri Lanka register emphatic victory over New Zealand

Scorecard Twenty20-Teams, Schedule, Team Standings
15 Sep 2007, Johannesburg: Sri Lanka registered seven wickets victory over New Zealand in the Group C match of Twenty20 World Cup at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

Chasing the victory target of 164 runs set by the New Zealand cricket team, SriLanka with the help of their former skipper Sanath Jayasuriya’s 61 runs off 44runs that included six fours and three sixes reached the target losing just threewickets with seven balls to spare.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. Their opening pair of Lou Vincent and Nathan McCullum added 22 runs when Nathan McCullum gave a catch to Lasith Malinga off Dilhara Fernando’s delivery.

He made 10 runs. Their second wicket of Lou Vincet too fell quickly adding just three more runs to team’s total score of 22.

After Lou Vincent’s dismissal came Peter Fulton, who made 62 runs—highest score for the Kiwis. He played some impressive shots that included 3 fours and three massive sixes before he gave an easy catch to wicketkeeper off Lasith Malinga’s delivery.

Other top scorers for New Zealand were Jacob Oram, who remained unbeaten with a personnel score of 33 runs and Peter Fulton who made 25 runs.

The Kiwis lost seven wickets while making 164 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lankan openers, Upal Tharanga and Sanath Jayasurya, gave their team a dream-start whacking two fours and a single in the very first over of the innings that was bowled by pacer Shane Bond. They made 9 runs in that over. Second over too was expensive for Kiwis, who conceded 11 runs in that over, which took Sri Lanka’s total to 20 runs from just two overs.

And by the end of third over, Sri Lankan team had piled up 35 runs without losing a wicket. Their openers added 82 runs. Upal Tharanga was the first one for Sri Lanka to leave for pavilion with 82 runs on board and with a personnel score of 37 runs.

They just lost three wickets chasing the target. Sanath Jayasurya was the highest scorer for Lankans and their skipper Mahela Jayawardena remained unbeaten at a personnel score of 35 runs.

The highest wicket taker for Kiwis was their skipper Daniel Vettori and for the Lankans it was Dilhara Fernando—both these bowlers took two wickets each for their respective teams that of the opening batsmen.
