New Zealand thrash Kenya by 9 wickets

Scorecard Twenty20-Teams, Schedule, Team Standings
12 Sep, 2007, Durban: In a dull match that would be remembered for six duck dismissals of Kenyan batsmen; New Zealand defeated Kenya by nine wickets in a Group C match of Twenty20 cricket World Cup at Kingsmead on Wednesday. New Zealand raced to a paltry target of 73 runs from 16.5 overs set by Kenya in just 7.4 overs losing one wicket.

After wining the toss, New Zealand cricket team asked Kenyan cricket team to bat first. Kenya cricket team had the worst start witnessed in recent years loosing their first three wickets for 0 run. In all, six of their batsmen went back to pavilion without scoring a run.

Chasing the victory target of 74 runs, New Zealand cricket team’s openers gave some reason to the spectators to cheer by hitting some magnificent fours and few sixes. The entire match just saw 12 fours and 5 sixes being hit. Kiwis’ opening pair added 40 runs for first wicket, when L. Vincent was caught by D.O. Obuya of Odoyo’s delivery. He made 27 runs.

Meanwhile, BB McCullum remained unbeaten on 16 while P.G. Fulton remained unbeaten on 21 runs, which he smashed in just 12 deliveries.

What a start it was for New Zealand cricket team! They took the first Kenyan wicket of M.A. Ouma, who was bowled out by Bond, of the second delivery of the first over.

T. Mishra; came in as a next batsman, faced two deliveries, and gave a catch to Vincent at point of Bond’s fifth delivery. By the end of the first over, the score of Kenya was 0 for the loss of two wickets.

Second over too proved fatal for Kenyans. They lost their third wicket of DO Obuya off Mark Gillespie first delivery. Obuya was hit wicket while trying to negotiate an incoming delivery from Gillespie.

Finally, Kenyan cricket team managed to score their first run when their fourth batsman, Collins Obuya, who drove the fourth ball of Gellespie at point. The grin that Kenyans had after scoring their first run losing three quick wickets was short lived.

They lost their fourth wicket just after that delivery. After the end of the second over Kenya’s score was 2 run at the loss of four wickets. The Kenyans wickets were falling as pack of cards.

The top scorers for Kenya were CO Obuya and TM Odoyo, both scored 18 runs each. CO Obuya took 25 balls to reach 18 runs and was stumped out of New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori’s delivery.

While TM Odoyo played 26 balls to reach 18 runs. Other Kenyans batsmen who chipped in were A. Obanda; who scored 4 run, J.K. Kamande, 14, and R.L. Bhudia, who came in as the last batsman, scored an unbeaten 11 that included one six.

What a disastrous performance from Kenyan cricket team; who had created sensation by reaching the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup that was held in South Africa.

This match saw four players two each from Kenya and New Zealand making a debut in Twenty20 cricket. For Kenya it was N Odhiambo and MA Ouma and from New Zealand side CS Martin and DL Vettori made their first appearance in Twenty20 international cricket.
