14 Sep 2007, Durban: In a nail-biting match that stretched up to bowl-out stage, India defeated their arch-rival Pakistan 3-0 in bowl-out, a stage to decide the winner when two teams score equal runs, at the Kingsmead Stadium, Durban.
The match went into bowl-out stage, when Pakistan cricket team couldn’t score a single run off the last delivery to go past India’s score of 141that would have won them the match.
Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq was batting then; and was supposed to take a single run off Sreesanth’s over to ensure Pakistan cricket team’s victory, but was run out taking a single by a brilliant fielding from Yuvraj Singh.

In bowl-out, each team picks up five bowlers who have to strike the wickets without any batsman guarding it. The team that strikes the wickets maximum times is declared the winner. It’s like the penalty shoot-out of football. If there is a tie in bowl-out too, then the same set of bowlers will bowl again.
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni picked up Virender Sehwag, Robin Uthappa, Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan, where as Umal Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Arafat, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Asif were nominated by Pakistan team.
Virender Sehwag was the first one to take aim at the wickets and he banged them. For Pakistan, Yasir Arafat came out to bowl, but he missed the stumps.
Harbhajan Singh was the second bowler for India, who too knocked the stumps; where as Umar Gul missed the stumps. With this India was 2-0 up.
Third bowler for India was Robin Uthappa, who had recently won the match for India against England in the dying moments; he too knocked the stumps. India was now leading and Pakistan team were supposed to hit the stumps in all the remaining three chances to stay in the contention.
But, the third bowler for Pakistan, Shahid Afridi, missed the stumps and Pakistan had missed the chance to beat their arch-rival India.
Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and invited India to bat first. India had a disastrous start, with both their opening batsmen getting out adding just two runs on board. By fifth over, India had lost its third wicket of Yunraj Singh, who scored one run, when they just had 19 runs on board.
Again, it was the young lad from Karnataka, Robin Uthappa and the flamboyant Indian skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni; who had earlier saved India in the last match of the recently concluded ODI series in England, who shouldered the responsibility of scripting a win for India.
Rohin Uthappa played a fine knock of 50 runs off 39 balls with the help of four 4s and 2 sixes. He was caught by wicketkeeper, Kamran off Sohail Tanvir’s over. Mahendra Singh Dhoni added 33 runs off 31 balls for India.
Down the order, it was the Test and ODI discarded, Irfan Pathan and Ajit Agarkar who chipped in with their knocks of 20 runs and 14 runs respectively.
Chasing the victory of 142, Pakistan had better start than Indians. Their first wicket of Imran Nazir fell in third over with 12 runs on board. Salman Butt, was the second man for Pakistan to go at a personnel score of 16 balls with 44 runs on scoreboard. He gave a catch to wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Ajit Agarkar’s over.
Pakistan third and fourth wickets fell in the gap of three runs with 47 runs on board. It was their middle-order batsmen, skipper Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq, who batted sensibly for their team.
Misbah-ul-Haq was the top scorer for Pakistan with 53 runs off just 35 balls with 7 fours and one six while their skipper contributed 20 runs.
Mohammad Asif was the highest wicket taker for Pakistan with four wickets conceding just 18 runs and for India it was Irfan Pathan who took two wickets.
Indian team were without the service of its three senior players—Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Saurav Ganguly.
