13 Sep 2007, Cape Town: England won their first match by thrashing Zimbabwe by 50 runs in the Group B match of Twenty20 cricket World Cup at the Newlands Stadium, Cape Town. Batting first, England cricket team with help of its star batsman, Kevin Pietersen’s 79 runs off 37 balls had piled up a score of 188 for nine wickets.
In reply, Zimbabwe, who miraculously defeated Australian, just managed to score 138 runs in the designated 20 overs for the loss of 7 wickets.
England won the toss and elected to bat first. Their opening batsmen gave them a good start with Darren Maddy scoring 14 runs of 9 balls and Matt Prior scoring 20 runs of 14 balls. Maddy was the first England wicket to fall on the third ball of third over with 20 runs on board. Luke Wright, the new batsman in, too followed Maddy on the next delivery of third over.

Kevin Pietersen, then joined Matt Prior, and played a stunning innings of 79 runs, which included 7 fours and 4 sixes. Kevin Pietersen was caught by Masakadza off Utseya’s delivery in 14th over.
Paul Collingwood was another top scorer for England cricket team with 37 runs off 28 balls. Andrew Flitnoff, England’s all-rounder, didn’t click with the bat. Flintoff just made 13 runs off 13 deliveries. Their tail-ender batsmen too couldn’t do much.
However, Zimbabwe initially looked as if they would repeat the superb performance that they did against Australians. Their opening bating pair of Vusimusi Sibanda and Brendon Taylor added 74 runs for the opening wicket. Vusimusi Sibanda made 29 runs off 25 balls while Brendon Taylor missed his half century by three runs. He made 47 runs off 39 deliveries hitting four fours and two sixes.
Zimbabwe’s next four wickets fell at quick intervals. They lost their four wickets for just 15 runs with 89 runs on board. In the last four overs, Hamilton Masakadza and their captain Prosper Utseya tried to resurrect the Zimbabwean innings, but they fell short of overs. Hamilton Masakadza made 27 runs off 23 runs while Prosper Utseya remained unbeaten on 13.
For Zimbabwe cricket team Elton Chigumbura was the pick of the bowler with four wickets from four overs, where as for England; Dimitri Mascarenhas picked three wickets from 4 overs conceding just 18 runs.
