Australia humiliate England at Twenty20 World Cup

14 Sep 2007, Cape Town: Australia bounced back from the humiliating defeat they suffered against Zimbabwe to trounce England by 8 wickets and 31 balls to spare in the Group B match played at Newlands, Cape Town.
Now, with this comfortable victory, Australian cricket team have advanced into the Super Eight stage. England cricket team, who won the toss and elected to bat first, were all out for 135 runs. In reply, Australian cricket team raced to that score in just 14 overs and five balls at the loss of two wickets.
England’s openers, Darren Maddy and Matt Prior, gave their team a good start without losing any early wicket. Their first wicket of Prior fell when England had 29 runs on board with Prior scoring 17 runs off 17 balls.

Luke Wright was the second England batsman to go. He made just three runs and was caught off Johnson’s delivery behind the stump with England having 37 runs on scoreboard. Their third wicket to fell early at the team score of 48 runs.
For England, it was their star all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who top scored with 31 runs off 19 balls that included four fours and one six followed by their flamboyant batsman Kevin Pietersen, who scored 21 runs off 20 deliveries.
England skipper Paul Collingwood made 18 runs when he was trapped leg before wicket of Brett Lee’s delivery.
Their lower-rung batsmen fell at regular intervals. Their last four batsmen—Dimitri Mascarenhas, Chris Schofield, Stuart Broad and James Kirtley, just added 8 run to the team’s total.
However, Australia had a slow start considering the track records of their explosive openers—Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden. Australia managed to score six runs each from the first two overs without losing any wicket.
By third over, these destructive openers had gathered momentum. They made 10 runs in third over taking their team score to 22 runs without any loss. And by 9th over, their team score was 78 runs when their first wicket of Adam Gilchrist fell for a personnel score of 45 runs off 28 balls, which included five fours and 0ne six. Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was the second man to head towards pavilion with 120 runs on board and their much-needed victory just 16 runs away with 6 overs and three balls to spare and with eight batsman to smash that 16 runs.
With Matthew Hayden, top scorer with 67 runs off 43 balls, at crease; Australian reached the victory target in just 14 overs and five balls.
