The revolution in cricket has, at last begun. With the IPL initiating regional teams with international cricketing talent, cricket as a sport will change by leaps and bounds.

The Indian Premier League (also known as the "DLF Indian Premier League"), is a Twenty20 cricket competition created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The first season of the Indian Premier League commenced on 18 April 2008.

Each IPL team will play the other seven teams home and away, the top four IPL teams at the end of the group stages will proceed through to the semi finals.

The IPL players auctions were held on February 20. The IPL placed icon status on a select few marquee Indian players. These players were Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag.

It features the world's best cricketers playing - their affiliation is decided by open bidding- for eight city-based franchises which are owned by a host of businessmen and celebrity consortiums. The inaugural edition of the IPL tournament will run from April 18 to June 1. The interesting fact about the IPL is that firstly, it has introduced the same concept of clubs for the first time in cricket history that Football has been following all these years.

The second factor is that the players from across the world will not in terms of nationality, but according to the market forces at play. The financial scale of the IPL is unbelievable. The BCCI has already made close to US$ 1.75 billion solely from the sale of TV rights ($908 million), promotion ($108 million) and franchises (approximately $700 million). Players are expected to earn close to US$1 million for a three-year contract. A whole cricket economy has emerged at the global level.
