The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league backed by the ICC. The Twenty20 league made its debut in April 2008, comprising eight teams with a minimum of 16 players each. The league will last for 44 days involving 59 matches.The IPL will function on a franchise system based on the American method of hiring players and transfers. The franchises had been put up for auction, where the highest bidder became the owner of the team, representing each city.
