| The IPL is the pet project of Lalit Modi, the vice-president of the BCCI, and is modeled along the lines of club football in Europe, specifically the English Premier League.
Although the declaration that such a tournament would happen, and that it would be a precursor to Twenty20 Champions League, the cricket's version of the European Champions League, came after Subhash Chandra, the owner of Zee Television said, in April last year that an unofficial league called the Indian Cricket League was in the pipeline.
The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league backed by the ICC. The Twenty20 league made its debut in April 2008, comprising eight teams with a minimum of 16 players each. The league will last for 44 days involving 59 matches. The IPL will function on a franchise system based on the American method of hiring players and transfers. The franchises had been put up for auction, where the highest bidder became the owner of the team, representing each city.
